|
If you wish to register a swap, or find out how to run one, contact Kerry
Morpeth the swap coordinator.
Kerry's email: morpeth@hotkey.net.au
All SWAPPERS.....PLEASE note....when you receive your swaps do not thank
everyone with an email to the list. If they have included their email
address please reply to that address and if their is no address it probably
means the swapper does not need to be thanked. However, if a label is attached
then its good manners to say thank you privately to those whos' blocks
you've received.
SCQ challenge II
Completed March 31 2004.
UFO challenge
OK, I have read several remarks about how people have done a New Year
count of their UFOs. And some have even said they want to finish off a
few UFOs before starting new projects.
OK we all know this is a mad thing to promise! But to encourage these
mad people, I am once again opening the Great UFO Challenge.
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to finish ONE UFO - yes,
just the one, complete right down to the binding and label, by June 30.
Six whole months to finish one UFO. C'mon, anyone can manage that!
Of course you can finish more than one.
In June I will set up a UFO challenge folder in the photos so people can
share their triumphs. If you don't have access to a scanner, you can snail
mail me a photo and I will scan it and put it up for you.
Now this is not meant to be interpreted as a criticism for having UFOs.
I personally have about thirty quilts I am "working on" or that
are just hanging about awaiting their turn. Often things are UFOs for
a darn good reason, like we discovered foundation piecing is not for us,
or we hate the colours. But if, like me, you are always making quilts
for other people and never get to work on the ones for yourself, this
is your chance to give your favourite UFO a deadline, so it will actually
get worked on.
So let's get cracking on some of those projects hanging round like a bad
smell..
Nine patch swap
Organiser: Ann-Maree Riley
This is an easy, centralised swap. You don't have to commit for the full
year, & it's good for people new to patchwork or the group. Participate
whenever the monthly theme appeals to you and you've got the time to make
blocks. Send in your blocks, meet some lovely people, and accumulate blocks
with a wide variety of fabrics. You can send your blocks in well in advance
if you wish - you don't even have to wait until the relevant month arrives.
These are the remaining themes for 2003 and all of 2004.
Remember you only need one theme fabric to participate......
JANUARY 2004 - 1930's reproduction fabrics.....one of the most popular
in the past. Use white or white on white for your 'other' fabric.
FEBRUARY 2004 - Blue and yellow (blue as the 'theme' fabric used in 5
squares, and yellow as the 'other' fabric used in 4 squares.
MARCH 2004 - Plaids
APRIL 2004 - Chickens - any fabric with chooks, roosters, eggs, chook
wire etc
MAY 2004 - Citrus - lemons, lime and orange (and any colour fabric for
the 'other')
JUNE 2004 - Vehicles - cars, trucks, bikes (push and motor)..one for
the blokes!
JULY 2004 - Leaves - any size, shape or colour....another popular repeat!
AUGUST 2004 - Brights - ever popular
SEPTEMBER 2004 - Christmas
OCTOBER 2004 - Roses
NOVEMBER 2004 - Red, red wine.....think claret DMC 221...great to go
with redwork
DECEMBER 2004 - No swap.....too busy shopping!!!
Layout: The top & bottom rows must read T O T (Theme, Other, Theme)
and the middle row O T O. The completed block is 6" finished (6.5"
unfinished). All fabric must be washed, 100% patchwork quality cotton
(calico not to be used - will be returned).
Sets: A set is 10, and you can send up to 2 sets.". A fabric can
not be repeated in more than 1 set, but you can mix up the fabrics within
a set. Please note: you can participate in this swap with just one theme
fabric! Most swappers make an entire set of 10 blocks using the same theme
fabric and the same 'other' fabric. The swap works because I group your
blocks with those of 10 other swappers. Each participant gives one of
their blocks to the others in their group and receives one block from
each of them. So even if you make all of your 10 blocks exactly the same,
each of 10 other swappers will receive only one of your blocks. That's
how variety is achieved in the swap. If you want to send in two sets,
then you must use a different theme and 'other' fabric in your second
set - no repeats from your first set.
"Other" Fabric: Any complementary fabric - patterned, tone on
tone, homespun or quilters' muslin. If homespun, try to use the best quality
available (not easy in country towns, I know - just do your best). Calico
not allowed - blocks will be returned.
Due date: Send to me by the 15th of each month...you can even send in
advance if you like...
Don't forget to put your return address on the envelope.
!! Please do not send thank yous to the SCQ list, if you like to respond
please do so to the individuals. If their email is not included they probably
do not wish to be contacted.

Labelling: Please put a label on the front of each block (it helps me
if I have reswap). Labels are easy. Print or write your name and email
address on a piece of paper, then sew to the corner of block, using largest
stitch possible.
Packing: Put each set into a plastic bag (PLEASE put your name on the
bag). I find that clean bags from the local vegie place great, - clip
1 corner to let the air out.
Return Envelope & Postage: Enclose a stamped, self addressed envelope
with my return address on the back. Please write on it how many sets you
have sent.
If you want me to use the same envelope, then enclose a stamped, self
addressed label.
Overseas: We'll work out what to do re postage, depending on where you
are.
Initial and theme swaps

Initial swap 2004
Both the INITIAL swap and THEME swaps are a 12 month commitment so you
really need to be sure that you are prepared to do a block a month for
12 months, so if you are considering an extended holiday in the next 12
months this is not the swap for you.
Both the Initial and Theme swaps run the same way.
Everyone is to supply their own background fabric for each block, you
can get 9 blocks out of l metre of fabric and you will need approximately
1.5 metres for the 12 blocks.
All fabric is to be 100% cotton, so wash and iron your fabrics and cut
them in to 12 x 13 squares the extra .5 is to allow for fraying
as these blocks get handled a lot and we have noticed that they tend to
fray, you can even overlock the edges for extra support. You can have
any size block you like but the maximum size is 13
The Rules that must be followed are very important and are not harsh but
to make each group run smoothly we need the rules to be taken seriously.
- ALWAYS email to your sendee and the digest that you have posted off
a swap to them.
- ALWAYS email to your sender and the digest that you have received
a swap off them.
- ALWAYS if you are running late and cannot make the monthly deadline
email to your sendee and the digest to say you are going to be late.
- If you are sick, or there has been a major disruption to your life
and you find that you cannot do your blocks for a while then let the
digest know and myself and I can find someone to do the blocks for you.
These rules are simple but need to be followed to allow each group to
run smoothly without hic cups.
Initial swap
After you have cut out your fabric on one of the blocks appliqué,
piece or embrodier your initial. Eg. P for Patricia. Examples are on the
photo section on SCQIS.
When you have completed your initial then post it along with the other
11 blank blocks to the next person on the list, you might like to include
a small note book for the other members of your group to write down a
little about themselves and what they did for you.
Then you will receive a swap each month and on the blank blocks you do
something starting with the letter of the swap you have been sent eg.
You get Suzannes swap and you do maybe a Sunbonnet Sue.
This continues on for 12 months then you will receive your own swap back.
Theme swap
After you have cut out your fabric on one of the blocks appliqué,piece
or embrodier your theme eg. Buildings you might do a house and then when
completed your theme block send it along with the other blank ll blocks
to the next person on the list, you might include a small note book for
other members of your group to write down a little about themselves and
what they did for you. Then you will receive a swap each month and on
the blank bocks you do a block with the theme of the swap you have been
sent eg. You might get Suzannes swap and she wants angels so you
do an angel .
This continues on for 12 months then you will receive your own swap back.
Things to do for both swaps
Attach a small piece of calico or homespun with your name and what you
did and attach it with big stitches to a corner of the blocks you do.
Everyone who signs up to do a swap will be invited to join SCQIS (Southern
Cross Quilters Initial Swaps) this way emails can be sent to our group
and not to scquilters.
Redwork swap
You do a redwork theme and then pass it on etc etc.
Raggedy Anne and Andy swap.
Everyone does Raggedy Anne and Andy. could be redwork or applique.
I am thinking of a Christmas swap which would run for 9 months also. so
only 9 people per swap for this one.
